A/C won't turn on: check these first
Most "dead" A/C calls turn out to be a setting, a battery or a tripped breaker.
Safety first: turn the power off before touching your A/C. Never open the electrical panel cover or the inside of the outdoor unit. If you smell burning, see sparks, or a breaker keeps tripping, turn it off and call us.
Steps
- Thermostat: set it to Cool and at least 3 degrees below the room temperature. If the screen is blank or dim, change the batteries.
- Breakers: the indoor and outdoor units each have their own breaker. A tripped one sits in the middle. Push it fully OFF, then back ON. Only try this once.
- Outdoor disconnect: check the switch or pull-out block in the gray box next to the outdoor unit is on.
- After power comes back, wait 5 minutes. The outdoor unit has a built-in delay that protects the compressor.
- Still nothing? Check the drain pan. A full pan trips a safety switch that shuts the A/C off (see Unclog the drain line).
Write down what the thermostat shows (any error code or blinking light). It helps us fix it faster.
Call us if: The breaker trips again. Don't keep resetting it, that can damage the system. (305) 842-0295
